Deployment of the Agile at-scale transformation of a future electric car (~300 people | 25 teams)

PROJECT OUTLINE

  • The client, a car manufacturer, has initiated a complete Agile transformation. The group wishes to evaluate the feasibility and impact of such a transformation within the global Engineering division, in particular its vehicle development logic.
  • After testing several small Agile pilots in all development areas, the Engineering division decided to launch its first wave of Agile transformation at scale.
  • To do this, an electric and autonomous car, the future flagship of the brand, was identified as the first development vehicle to evolve towards agility.

PROJECT APPROACH

  • Developed a staffing model for the project and assisted management with cultural mindset changes.
  • Setting up a common physical work platform with co-located actors dedicated to the vehicle development project.
  • Preparation of the onboading sequence by team typologies (Vehicle, Transversal, Zones, Components): objectives and launch of the Agile transformation, advice for the redesign of governance bodies, training for the new roles.
  • Operationalization of the target model: support to team members in the implementation of new Agile practices and frameworks (e.g., parts suppliers, designers, engineers, production assemblers, buyers, etc.).
  • Adaptation of the target model: bottom-up feedback, business process evolution, customer orientation, inter-team synchronization, interdependency management.

RESULTS

  • Convincing results in terms of changes in the mentality of the actors of the project platform: better employee satisfaction, actors convinced of the advantages brought by Agile development.
  • Clear improvement of the quality of the final digital model after the freezing of the stylistic theme.
  • Identification of the advantages and disadvantages of operating in Agile mode within the different types of teams.
  • Adaptation of the Agile framework to scale (governance bodies, inter-team synchronization, dependencies between Agile and non-Agile entities, etc.).
  • Recommendations to the top management to continuously improve the next progressive waves towards a fully Agile vehicle development.
